5 Maintenance Tips For Your New Home

If you’ve recently moved into a new house, then you likely know if there are any issues or flaws present based on the home inspection. Perhaps the seller already took care of most issues to comply with the terms of the purchase negotiation. GreenLInk Home Inspections sees countless Long Island homes, and we know which flaws on the home inspection report can lead to bigger issues down the road. Here are five maintenance tips for your new home to help you keep things working as they should and avoid some potential problems.

1. Replace Smoke Detector Batteries

Unless your home’s seller assured you that the smoke detector batteries were just replaced, go ahead and replace them all yourself. This goes for carbon monoxide detectors as well. Change them all at once when you move in, and then create a recurring schedule for replacing them all together each time in the future.

2. Replace Your Furnace Filters

When you move into your new home, you should change your air filter and document the date. Putting off or forgetting this task can lead you to issues and possible repairs needed for your system. Once you change it, set a reminder to change it every one to three months, depending on the type of filter you have.

3. Clean Your Gutters

The seller may have already cleaned your home’s gutters, but this is an important maintenance item that needs to be completed twice each year. Check them upon moving in, and then plan to clean them each spring and fall to remove leaves and other debris that may clog them. Failing to clean your gutters could set off a chain of events that would spell trouble for your roof or foundation.

4. Locate Electrical Panel & Water Valve

You need to know where the fuse box and water shutoff valve are in case you ever need to shut off all electricity or all water to the whole house. Likewise, you might need to reset a fuse that has been tripped. Locate these components and learn how they work. It can be easy to forget about them until an urgent situation arises.

5. Set Up Inspections as Needed

Remember any future issues you may encounter that could be prevented through a simple inspection or at least identified and treated early. GreenLInk Home Inspections offers termite inspections to address Long Island’s moderate to high-risk level for these pests. We can also provide flood zone inspections and engineering services to help your home thrive in the unique landscape of our area.
